All together, we put together 3 of this brand of bookcases.
By the time we got to the 3rd one, it ran super smoothy - I did the last 2 myself, and the 3rd one went very quickly.
We have put together many things - yes, these instructions do need to be followed and slightly modified to ensure the best assembly.
Here's what we learned:
1) take all the pieces out - clean them off, separate them, think about what goes on the top, the sides, the center, and how all the stained edges need to face out. (btw, the smell was not too bad coming off of any of the wood or cloth parts...we still let things air out a few days before using them.)
2) make sure to seat the wooden dowels as far down as they go. And, do it quickly - right after you add the glue and then place them. Pounding them down carefully with a rubber or plastic mallet must be done right then to make sure they are fully seated. If not, they don't budge later, due to the glue, and in fact one of them pierced the top of the first unit because it wasn't seated into the side panel deeply enough.
3) the center/shelving panels should be put together resting on their sides. (instead of in the standing up mode, where the short panels could just fall off)

Really amazing product for the price. Gave it 4 stars instead of 5, 'cause you need a bit of practice to have the assembly go smoothly.
