OK -- if you say the base is marble, I'll take your word for it. Mine looks like plain black rock. Not really a problem -- I didn't buy this for the base!

Overall, this is an extremely high-quality lamp. It looks gorgeous, and is mechanically sound -- which is important with something as big as this. This is a big lamp, with a HUGE arc, and it will be a definite conversation piece in your living room. Ours is in my photo studio lounge, and clients always comment on how beautiful it is.

Assembly was not trivial -- some mechanical skill is required. It took me about 45 minutes to put it together properly. HIghly recommended.

I ordered this On Stage Stand desk because I needed to replace an Ikea desk that I had gotten rid of as my production desk. Nothing was wrong with my old desk, other than that the Allen wrench screws had worn out over time with all the set ups and take downs associated with me moving all the time. It was time for me to get a desk better suited for audio/video production anyway yet I didn't have an arm and a leg of funds to get it with, neither. While looking for inexpensive alternatives to some of the more popular and pricey products out there, I happened upon On Stage Stands. I read the reviews, which seemed kinda mixed; some good, some bad but for the most part it seemed to even out as far as overall perception goes. I really needed a desk and nothing other than going back it Ikea and looking for the same desk I had before were my options, so I took a chance on this product. Some of the complaints I saw were about it not being real wood (its cheap, so what... so long as its sturdy I'm good, not trying to impress anyone here) and something about the holes not lining up (I've got tools... if its a problem, I can fix that).

The only problem that I encountered was I guess the handling of the desk. One of the corners seemed a little dented (lending credit to the complaint about it not being real wood) but it wasn't bad enough that I couldn't just flip it another way and be fine with it. So in a nutshell, I'm pleased with it so far. My last desk lasted me about 6-7 years pretty much, with moving every couple years which isn't that bad. We'll see how this one holds up over time. Set up was fairly easy, I don't know what everyone was complaining about. But you know what? In the end, you get what you pay for... I chose a cheap desk but for the money you pay, I think its a great product. I'm glad someone thought about the DIY home musicians/artists out there that don't have the bucks or time to build or rent out a big budget studio. I obviously stand behind my decision to get this product and am actually thinking of purchasing some of the accessories to extend the workspace of the desk. My turntables could use some of that space too. I'm definitely ready to get things started again. Been far too long...

OttLite Sydney Desk Lamp Review

I came across Ott products (including a desk lamp very similar to this model) a few years ago and was attracted by the claim that the light spectrum produced by the bulb is the closest to natural light and therefore more healthy (and producing less eye-strain) than more common incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.

I've since purchased Ott desk lamps and use them at my office and home, and I have Ott floor lamps in both places including by the bedside for reading at night.

In my experience over this period of several years I am convinced that the Ott bulbs do produce very natural lighting for comfortable reading and I am completely satisfied with them. I have also had no problems with any of my Ott products (2 desk lamps and 3 floor lamps), either with respect to the quality of the lamps or lifespan of the bulbs. (I therefore have no experience with Ott customer support because I have not had reason to make use of it).

(A comment regarding their customer support based upon my reading of other customer reviews here on Amazon. I have noticed that Ott customer support has individually responded - via "comments" - to many if not all of the negative customer reviews posted to their products here on Amazon, asking that the persons who have had a bad experience contact Ott so that their problems could be corrected. That is something that I have not noticed with other products and suggests to me that they are really paying attention to customer feedback and want to provide good customer support. Based on that I would expect problems to be handled by them in a very good way. It would be helpful if other Amazon customers who have initially had a bad experiences, but subsequently contacted Ott as the company has suggested, could provide an update to their reviews so that others can see how the issues were handled and hopefully resolved).

The only downside to these products as far as I am concerned is that the bulbs and lamps are made to fit each other and you therefore need to purchase replacement Ott bulbs, which of course are not cheap. I would not use them for every light in the house for that reason, but for those lamps that are primarily for reading, they are my preference.

I have found it difficult to quantitatively compare the Ott products to other lamps that make similar claims (Verilux being perhaps the main example). I have been unable to satisfy myself as to whether or not Ott is superior or even different from these others, and I do not have personal experience with any of the competitors to Ott. I do know that when I went to the Ott website to see what information was available on the light spectrum of the light produced by the bulbs, so that I could attempt to make a comparison of the light quality for the Ott bulbs vs their competitors, I could not find that information available from them (yes, I am an engineer). I also did not find such information on the Verilux website. If I am able to come across such a comparison, I will update this review to include it.

Very good lamps for reading use and I feel very comfortable in recommending them.

Enitial Lab Maxwell Open Back Display Stand, Black Review

The holes that came with the pieces weren't large enough for the screws to go all the way through, even with a powerdrill screwdriver. The planks would wobble! We had to manually redrill the wholes so the pieces would fit securely together and even after 3+ hours of work, two of the pieces were not at 90 degrees, we unscrewed and rescrewed to the point of almost ruining the screwhead to no avail. I didn't not have a drill bit for my power drill and after reading the other comment, it seems that the only way the bookcase can be constructed to look like the image. But overall it would have been very pleasing had the two smaller shelves not been crooked. Had I known I needed to redrill all the existing holes and create new ones I would probably not have bought it.
