Sauder Cornerstone Lateral Filing Cabinet Review

Before I go too far with this, let's make one thing clear about the SAUDER CORNERSTONE LATERAL FILE: it's not made of real cut timber. It's particleboard, with your choice of phony wood veneer. We chose the "sky alder", whatever that is. (Is there a "sea alder"?) Anyway, the self-assembled product is a good looking piece that blends well with the other furniture in our double-wide. Come to think of it, it looks pretty good unassembled and spread out on the floor, too.By its very nature, particleboard is heavy. If you and the Missus intend to carry the shipping carton up more than a few steps, pre-position the heart medication so it'll be within desperate clutch of your clawing hand when you're prone on the ground. Or have the young bucks of the delivery service muscle the box to the front door.As one who's written many technical instructions, I admire the illustrated assembly directions provided with the kit. Unless you can't read English or Spanish or are visually challenged, you can't go wrong. It boggles the mind to contemplate the trial and error Sauder invested in the creation of this document, and the number of unsuccessfully assembled pieces left in the company parking lot by untrained employees conscripted into trial runs. Since each kit includes a variety of wood screws, an especially nice touch is the to-scale depiction of each size and type at the relevant point in the instructions with which the builder can do a comparison to assure selecting the right one. The "duh" factor is minimized.And speaking of screws, the number in the kit is large. Do yourself a favor and invest in a power drill/driver. However, the flip side of using such a labor-saver is to take care not to over-drive the screw into the particleboard as you may strip the hole.The actual assembly of this file, as well as several other Sauder products (desk, bookcases), proved reasonably free of problems. We never ran short of the proper whatsits and thingymajigs. As a matter of fact, there were usually a few left over - extras included in the kit by design or error, I like to think. Our only complaint is with the drawer-front engineering. Counting the six drawers put together on this file and the desk, three finished drawers failed to close perfectly because of a front panel slightly out of kilter. And that's after following the assembly instructions to the letter, and driving the screws into the pre-drilled holes provided. In these cases, we tweaked each front's position, and attached it to the body of the drawer with self-drilling screws at points distant from Sauder's pre-drilled holes. Your on your own obtaining the self-drilling screws.Assembly time will vary with the age and physical flexibility of the builder. This file took my wife and I about 3 hours. But we're in our mid-50s, and rising from a sitting or kneeling position on the floor was painful to see and hear. Were we just 10 years younger, it probably would've gone much quicker. Try not to age if you can help it. Or guilt-trip (a verb I just made up) any offspring into doing it with, "You'd allow the mother that bore you in agony to do all the work?". Way Basics zBoard Eco Storage Cube Plus 2-Shelf Storage Unit, Espresso Wood Grain Review

I first got one of these nifty little storage units for my room. Once my roommate saw it he just had to get one for himself (he's a big eco buff). So we have a Red and Orange duo standing right next to each other.

I couldn't believe how strong and durable the zBoards from Way Basics are! I have stored everything from my gym shoes, heavy textbooks, CD's, DVD's, even Vinyl. Assembly was a cinch; I didn't even need the instruction guide! Can you say that for Ikea furniture?

My initial concern was the 3M industrial strength double-sided tape. However the way the pieces are constructed, the zBoards are essentially supporting themselves with the horizontal zBoards resting on the vertical zBoards. The tape is super sticky and holds the boards together incredibly well. I guess if they use tape in airplanes, they can use it in furniture, genius!

The bottom line: it's eco, it's colorful, the price you can't beat and assembly was as easy as 1, 2, 3. Way Basics is Way cool!

Balt Pop Adjustable Height Laptop Mobile Stand, Mahogany Review

I have been using this mobile desk for 8-12 hours per day for one full month now. I absolutely love it, so I figured it was time to write a review that might help someone else who's in the market for this type of product.

After combing through numerous reviews of mobile laptop desks/workstations, it seemed there was a lot of dissatisfaction with most models I saw on Amazon. The complaints are myriad; most have to do with poor adjustability, lack of stability, wobbling, shoddy quality, etc. All of these units were well under $100. With most things in life, you get what you pay for, and I figure laptop desks are no exception. I don't know what one would expect for $60.

I work at home. Because I needed a laptop workstation that is mobile, adjustable, stable and comfortable (I work for hours at a time), I really couldn't afford to waste my time and throw away $45-$80 on a piece of junk that would need to be replaced in 2 months or less. Though there were no Amazon reviews of this promising-looking desk, I was able to find 4 excellent reviews of this workstation on another site, though I purchased here. This unit costs more than most out there (except the fifteen hundred dollar Steelcase Airtouch) but after using this workstation, I can honestly say this item is totally worth its price and I would not hesitate to purchase another. My husband actually wants one now.

It was extremely easy to assemble and the instructions are very clear. The only error in the instructions is the direction to tighten screws using an Allen wrench. This is incorrect--a Phillips head screwdriver is what is actually needed.

The instructions suggest checking the screws at least once every 6 months and tightening if necessary. I view as a positive sign that the manufacturer (Balt) speaks about maintaining the unit in the long-term: this suggests that they actually expect it to last.

About the unit:
- It does NOT wobble--it's very stable.
- The pneumatic height adjustment lever works well, though when lowering the desktop, I need to push the desktop down with some force. The height is infinitely adjustable within its range of 21.25" - 31.25".
- The top spins 360 degrees in both directions, but it doesn't spin loosely; it would only spin if one actually intended for it to spin.
- The wheels work smoothly even on carpet and feature two locking casters.
- The wheels and base easily slide under the frame of my bed, though this is not usually where I work. I can also use it sitting on my couch, though I suppose YMMV depending on the build of your couch.
- The top surface easily supports my 15.3" laptop with inches of space left on both sides. Therefore it would support a much larger laptop as well. The top is 15.25" deep and 25.75" wide.

There are two finish options on this unit: Mahogany Wood Laminate, and black. I meant to order the black but I accidentally ordered the mahogany. I was afraid the mahogany laminate would look cheap, because wood laminate often does look cheap, in my experience. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it looks quite nice and not at all cheap. The desktop features a gently curved beveled rounded edge. This desk looks classy.

The only thing that I wish were different: I wish it adjusted a little taller so it would be easier for a taller person to use when standing. If the height could be raised up to 36 or even 40 inches, it would be even better. Still, for the money, you can't beat this unit.

Get this, you won't regret it!

Each has its pluses and minuses. For your reference, I've added a photo to this page showing the two lamps next to each other. The following comparisons may be helpful in choosing not just between these two lamps, but among similar lamps.

Placement:
**** 4 stars Normande - this is a desk lamp. It has to have a hard surface to sit on and its reach is limited so you need to get close to it. However, if you are using a table top, this is easy to pull towards you as it sits on the table. Total height if gooseneck is stretched straight up = 21.5". The head is almost 7" of that. Total bendable gooseneck is 5". Given that the gooseneck is short, it is more difficult to use this magnifier over a large item, such as a large book. Base is weighted, no tip-over even with head totally extended.
***** 5 stars Fulcrum - this is a floor lamp. No table-top needed, longer reach, so can be used if you are sitting on your couch or if you are sitting at a table. However, I wouldn't call it a LONG reach. Total height if stretched straight up = 53.25". The head is 9.5" of that. Total bendable gooseneck is 16.5". Base is weighted, no tip-over even with head totally extended.

Size of Magnifying Lens:
**** 4 stars Normande - The round lens is 3 1/2 inches diameter. When you are actually working on something underneath the lamp, this is a serviceable size, but it is easy, when you're manipulating something, to wander outside it's range.
***** 5 stars Fulcrum - The oval lens is 5 1/2 inches long, which gives you more space to work in. However, about 1 1/2 inches at the gooseneck end is partially taken up by the 1-inch round higher magnification loupe (an inset of a round higher magnification lens). (The loupe is 1/2 inch from the edge of the lens.)

Strength of Magnifying Lens:
A score on this depends totally on what you need. If I am doing counted cross-stitch needlework, or just need a little magnification for reading something, a 2X magnification works great. If I am painting and assembling a dollhouse miniature, or trying to find a deep sliver, or put one of those darned tiny screws in a pair of glasses, a higher magnification works better.
***** 5 stars Normande - The lens is 5x magnification.
**** 4 stars Fulcrum - The main lens is 2x magnification. The 1-inch loupe is 6x magnification. (Note, as it's small, placement is very important for the loupe.)

Power options:
**** 4 stars Normande - This is an electric lamp with an average cord length. On/Off switch is conveniently located on the lamp base.
***** 5 stars Fulcrum - This lamp can be powered with three "D" batteries, which makes it portable. According to Fulcrum's website, it should work for 80 hours on three batteries. (I can't comment on that, as I haven't used the battery option.) The lamp also has an AC adapter with an average cord length, and can be used like a regular electric lamp. (They recommend you take out the batteries if you use the AC.) Because the AC option uses an AC Adapter, rather than a regular lamp cord, you are not trailing an electric cord around as you use the battery option: the AC Adapter disconnects from the lamp base (unlike a regular lamp cord). The On/Off button is conveniently located on the top of the lamp head.

Heat Produced:
*** 3 stars Normande - The metal shade (that holds the lens and light source) gets very hot if the lamp is on for a while. Good thing the On/Off is on the lamp base. But referring back to Placement, after the lamp is hot, changing the head's position will require an oven glove!
***** 5 stars Fulcrum - The lamp doesn't get hot to the touch.

Light Source:
***** 5 stars Normande - The lamp comes with a 12-Watt Daylight T4 Circular Bulb. This is a lovely full-spectrum light source resulting in realistic colors. It is also nice and bright. A T4 Circular 12 Watt bulb is the only bulb you should use in this lamp. I found replacement Full Spectrum T4 bulbs available on the Office Depot website, which offered this information: Price $7.99 each. Brand name Victory Light. Energy efficient bulb uses "up to" 75% less energy than an equivalent 50-watt bulb and lasts "up to 5 times longer" than an ordinary light bulb. Output 800 lumens. Average rated life 6,000 hours. As I just got the Normande, I can't comment on the life of the bulb it came with.
**** 4 stars Fulcrum - The lamp has 12 LED bulbs inset in the head. The light they put out is soft and easy on the eyes, but just a little to the blue side. It is not as bright as the Normande, but it covers a wider area. Again, whether or not this makes a difference to you, depends on what you use the light for. The LED's are not removable or replaceable. According to the instructions, the LED's "may last up to 100,000 hours". I have had my Fulcrum for a year, and haven't had any problem, but it does not get constant use.

Assembly:
***** 5 stars Normande - No assembly needed. Packaging is sturdy and safe for shipping.
***** 5 stars Fulcrum - The power cord is threaded through already. You just have to screw the sections together, which wasn't a big deal. Each end had a protective plastic washer, which double insured there was no problem with the threads. Packaging is sturdy and safe for shipping.

So there you have my pluses and minuses. Given that I have room for both lamps, I am glad to have both of them, for different needs.

Basyx BL2102NN BL Laminate Series 66 by 30 by 29-Inch Rectangular Desk Shell, Mahogany Review

This came to me with the wood but no hardware. Basyx/Hon sent a hardware pack quite quickly... No questions asked. It was easy to put together and it's built to last and take abuse. The top of the desk works with optical mice and seems to be able to take whatever abuse I throw at it. It's super sturdy holding up 110 pounds of equipment on top, no bowing or anything.

What a misleading piece of junk. Not only does the "linen" shade glow yellow from either a white or clear bulb, it's not deep enough to prevent you from getting retina burns as the bulb is not hidden at all unless you turn the lamp backwards which pretty much defeats the purpose and the cord sticks out at you.

I was hoping it would be able to be placed in the middle of the room to be the show piece but instead we had to place it in front of something as more of a small rug. Great quality rug overall!
